JULY IS OVER!!

Where is the summer going so fast?  We ended the month of July by taking two of our granddaughters (8 and 10 years old--daughters of Son #2) to the beach for a few days.  We had a wonderful time, lots of laughs, some fun at the beach, swimming pool time, and great visiting!  Those two girls were so polite and well-behaved that it made our trip all that more enjoyable.
The girls wanted me to paint a picture of them like I did when we took two of the girls to the beach three years ago.  I like this shot below for the colors, the waves and the sky.  They made sure I took a bunch of pictures to use as a guide for my painting.
The girls also enjoyed early morning walks on the beach where they gathered sea shells and sand crabs (Eew!) so they could examine their pinchers and blue eyes and then let them go again.

On the way home from the beach we stopped off to visit Son #1 and family, and then went on to visit Son #4 and family.  The cousins all had a grand time seeing each other.

And now we move into August--ALREADY!

A GATHERING OF THE COUSINS

Our Son #2 rode in the MS 150 Bike Ride from Houston to Austin this weekend. Son #4 and family met us and we all gathered to cheer him on. The ride stopped midway the first night and we went to eat together along with the five cousins. Son #2 looked a bit weary, but was eager for the next day to begin the second half of his ride.
All five cousins with Son #2 at the restaurant.
The second day we all gathered at our half-empty house to eat and let the children play. I had already packed all the toys and books but the children managed to find enough to entertain themselves in the living room and in our backyard.
And, of course, we had the usual art session. The exhibit on our mantle includes one of my latest pictures--not quite finished.
And still no word on when we will actually have to move out of our house for remodeling. We are waiting for the building permits and the builder says that it should be next week. I am learning to live with less and less STUFF each week. I think there must be a lesson for me in that statement!

A FAMILY GATHERING

This past weekend we had a family gathering and celebrated 5 birthdays that were happening within this first week of April. My brother, sister and I were all together with our Mother who turns 94 today.
My brother and his wife had all of their children and their granddaughter at this family gathering. My sister had her daughter-in-law with two grandchildren and I had Son #4 with his two children here. We had five little ones between the ages of 8 months and four years old. Our two-year-old (almost three) granddaughter came over to our house before the other children appeared on Sunday morning and was disappointed that they were not here. She said she wanted her cousins here because "my cousins are crazy about me!" My husband and I had to quietly stifle our laughs.
Here are a few pictures of our many activities over the several days that we were together:

Cousins getting to know each other

My family with my mother at the Birthday Party

My sister-in-law with the youngest of the cousins.

The cousins on an Easter Egg Hunt.

My hubby entertaining Miss Ella Bella like he did our boys a "few" years back.

Our lovely neighbor (on the right) provided a pedicab ride

My brother helped entertain the cousins in our backyard

And we ate every time we turned around. Yum! Mexican food!

We had a wonderful time and the weekend was over before we knew it. I am so grateful for the times that we celebrate together.

A MEETING OF THE COUSINS

On New Year's Eve we gathered with Son #2 (also known as WB) and Son #4 and their families to celebrate WB's birthday. It was also a gathering of the cousins who had a wonderful time playing together and getting to know one another a little better!

We shared a birthday dinner with WB at a very nice restaurant and Grandmommy read to Little One while the big girl cousins had a chance to sit together.

Daughter-in-law, Kara, made WB's delicious carrot cake from scratch and we all enjoyed having a piece. I probably need that recipe for a cake for hubby--his birthday is next and he keeps talking about how good it was!

During our time together, Miss Ella Bella discovered the piano and Little One discovered her pockets!

We had a wonderful time visiting, watching the children play, taking LOTS of pictures, and celebrating a birthday and the beginning of a new year. Happy New Year to all!

WE HAD VISITORS!

Today we had visitors. My sister and her daughter and two children came over. My sister brought flowers for our mom and we went over and the children watched Mom knitting a scarf and then helped decorate her little tree.

Then we called my nephew and invited his family over so the cousins could play and we could have an impromptu Bar-B-Que dinner together. We counted and found four generations at the table tonight. What a blessing to be able to share this time amongst family members.

Of course, we took pictures and were quickly able to share them with my brother and his wife who are still at Mayo where my sister-in-law is quickly recovering (quite miraculously--thanks to many and their prayers!) from a kidney transplant about three weeks ago.

My Cousin Mike

I spent many happy summers at my grandparents’ house in Amherst, a tiny town with red sand and heat and gorgeous days. While I was there, Grandmother allowed me to roam freely. My grandfather was a banker in Amherst and my grandmother was a gardener, artist, marvelous cook and so much fun to be with.

Across the street from my grandparents’ house, Aunt Alma (grandmother’s sister) and Uncle Neil lived with their youngest son, Mike, who was about four years older than me. He was tall, dark, and handsome, and had gorgeous sparkling blue eyes. He and I “played together”—or rather, he tolerated it when I tagged along behind him most of the time. In the picture to the right, he is giving me my first driving lesson in front of Aunt Alma’s house.

Mike was my idol. He was always the leader and I believe he thoroughly enjoyed that role. I was his willing follower and worshipping slave. Anything Mike said or did was perfect and I did it—from jumping off barns with Superman sheets tied around our necks to climbing their tall windmill to touch the blades to crawling up inside a nearby revival tent to listen to the Pentecostals (we called them “Holy Rollers”) sing and shout and wave their hands. This was a new kind of religion to me after our quiet and sedate Catholic experiences!

Mike and I loved to catch horny toads in Grandmother’s garden. We kept them in a shoe box with a little dirt and we gave them grass and bugs to eat. Mike showed me how to rub their tummies to make them go to sleep. We put them on the sidewalk and watched until they woke up and turned themselves over again. He warned me not to let the horny toads spit “tobacco” on me because he said it stained and did not wash off. And, of course, anything Mike told me I believed!

Mike led me into many adventures and some that my parents would shudder if they had known about. I loved him dearly. After my granddad died when I was about eight, I no longer went to Amherst and Mike and I did not meet again until a few years ago. However, when I heard that Mike married Jeannie, I was angry and jealous that he was no longer “my Mike.” When I heard that he had become a pilot for Delta I was very proud of “my Mike.”

A few years ago we met again at a family reunion and we sat up until late at night talking by a beautiful lake with a full moon. Everyone else was inside the lodge playing pool and poker and rummy, but Mike and I talked about “old times.” For a brief evening, he was once again “my Mike” with the sparkling blue eyes, but with a bit of grey in his thick black hair. We laughed over our adventures of so many years ago and he told me that I made him mad because, when he teased me, I ran to my grandmother and told on him and he got in trouble. He said that he stayed in trouble a lot in those days!

The picture on the left shows Mike all dressed up. I must admit that I never remember seeing him dressed like that. Most of the time our summer outfits consisted of t-shirts and shorts and no shoes.
