UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOOD

We have a neighborhood consisting of about 20 houses on two cul de sacs. Some of the houses have been inhabited for 40 years or more by the same families and some houses have new families with young children to liven up the neighborhood once again. One of the wonderful things about living here is that we all tend to look after one another and share our interests, talents, and problems. It is like having an extended family all around us.

Last night one of the neighbors invited us to gather in his backyard around a cozy fire in his "cowboy cooker" for a "Welcome Spring" evening. We discussed neighborhood events and activities, upcoming elections, and laughed and visited for several hours. It is a wonderful neighborhood and we are very fortunate to be part of such a special place.

  1. What a blessing to have a "connected" neighborhood. For various reasons, most of which center around a huge diversity (in every sense -- age, lifestyle and ethnicity) of residents, and an increasingly busy street down the center, few in our neighborhood even know each other.

Before we moved to SW PA twenty-three years ago, we lived in a NW neighborhood much like yours, except over the dozen years, the kids became self-sufficient, all the women went to work, and group gatherings dwindled.

I never did live in a "front porch" neighborhood, and have a tiny hole in my heart from missing the camaraderie I read about in novels.

  2. Yes, I think we are unique in this day and age. We have several different ethnic/cultural groups, different age groups with retirees, working and career people represented, but we manage to gather now and then and have wonderful sharings and discussions. I treasure the gift that we have here.
